Alpha Company TAC NCO (12th Grade)
Greetings, I am Sergeant First Class Alexander Yin, and I teach Military Science (College & Career) for 12th-grade Seniors in Alpha Company. I have the honor and privilege to serve amazing young people and help them apply and transition into colleges and universities. I have 18 years of military service, and I served in the 2nd Ranger Battalion, Long Range Surveillance Detachment (Airborne), Sniper Detachments, 1-160th Infantry, and 1-184IN in California. I have numerous deployments to the Middle East and Eastern Europe. My service ranges from being an Infantrymen (pew pew guys) to serving as a Religious Affairs NCO, working alongside religious leaders in the military and in any country and region I serve to better international relations through religion.
I have also served in many California Youth Programs and Community Department capacities. I served in Cadre, Lead Cadre, Recruiting and Placement, Platoon Sergeant, Senior Cadre Supervisor, and Commandant. I started serving the Youth in October 2008 at the Sunburst Youth ChalleNGe Academy. It was not my plan to work with kids. I had no desire to work with kids. I applied to Sunburst because it provided me with income to train and return to the Army. I fell in love with the job within the first week and decided my career would change from being a gunfighter into someone serving the youth. A tragic life event led me to have a heart for the youth. In Iraq in 2008, while returning to base, I witnessed young children crying and physically hurt from an insurgency attack. I tried to administer first aid to a young boy but failed to save his life. That one memory of the loss of innocence keeps me driven to serve the kids I work with now. I served eight years at Sunburst Youth ChalleNGe Academy before joining the Discovery ChalleNGe Academy. I led a new staff team to stand it as the premier credit recovery academy in Northern California. I left Discovery ChalleNGe Academy in the summer of 2019 and joined the Oakland Military Institute College Prep Academy a day after my last Cadets graduated from Discovery.
I have a heart and passion for serving the youth. Our young people, your young people, are not just the future of our communities, cities, states, and country, but they are also the present. Every child deserves a chance to receive an education that leads them to success, achievements, pride, and a continuing desire to learn. I promise my Cadets every day that they will always get the best of me because they are worthy. I work alongside some of the most selfless people at OMI. I am very thankful to be part of a team that wants to give the best education and want to develop amazing human beings in our society. My daughter is my pride and joy in life. Sometimes I wonder if I am a better father because my previous Cadets have taught me how to nurture and care or if I am a better Cadre because of my daughter. “Always Faithful, Always Forward”
