Due:
How do you feel about Jay Gatsby? Love him? Can’t stand him? Is he a romantic dreamer with a heroic pursuit or a morally corrupt figure? Make your argumentative opinion very CLEAR with evidence from the text.
You will respond to one of your classmates opposing their opinion NOT affirming it ( there should be no, yes, I completely agree statements).
Due:
Based on Chapter 8, at the beginning of the chapter, the story is interrupted at its most dramatic point. What is the author’s purpose in breaking the story here? Why not continue with what happened after the accident?
You will respond by tomorrow and answer one of your peers by Thursday.
Due:
You will answer all the unlocked MCQ questions under Unit 9. Don't worry about FRQ we will work on that next week. If this is not completed by Sunday I will mark this down.
Due:
“Self-control!” Repeated Tom incredulously. “I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife. Well, if that’s the idea you can count me out.... Nowadays people begin by sneering at family life and family institutions, and next they’ll throw everything overboard and have intermarriage between black and white.” Flushed with his impassioned gibberish, he saw himself standing alone on the last barrier of civilization. Respond to this passage by answering both: a. How this passage reflects Tom’s character / personality b. Argue how this passage adds to the novel’s meaning as a whole (What commentary is Fitzgerald making about life or society through this passage?).
The question is due tomorrow, the response to someone else is due by Friday.
Due:
What part of his past is Gatsby trying to recapture? Is he successful? Is there a person, feeling, or event in your past that you'd want to revisit? Because, Gatsby believes that the past can be repeated. Is he right?
I love this question and I'm hoping you love it as well.
Due:
This week you will be working on your thesis for the Wilde prompt. As well as your body paragraph topic points. Remember if you agree, your evidence has to show support that you agree and vice versa. You will work on it this way and then put it all together the following week. I will check your answers to last weeks assignment this week and send you any tips, corrections, or follow ups before this is due.
Due:
Fitzgerald wrote, "You don't write because you want to say something, you write because you have something to say." What do you think did he had to say in Gatsby? What do you think his message is and why would it still be relevant today?
Due:
Do you think Jay Gatsby represents the American dream? What do you think Fitzgerald is saying about the American dream in the 1920s? What statement might Fitzgerald be making about the mores or ethos of American culture?
Remember, you must answer another classmate by Tuesday night.
Due:
In the first few Chapters we are introduced to the eyes of Dr. Eckelburg that looks upon The Valley of the Ashes, all symbols that Fitzgerald is using. So tell me: The “blue and gigantic” eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckelburg provide stark contrast to the desolate Valley of Ashes. Continuing with the idea of the loss of morality (the last question I posed), suggest why Fitzgerald has included this seemingly random billboard in this setting. (think about color, time period, the American dream, the great depression)
Due:
Good Morning AP,
This week we will be working on the 2016 Wilde Prompt that I put up last week. We will be looking at the prompt since you should have annotated and answering the following questions.
1. How does the thesis statement reflect the complexity of the topic?
2. Explain the overall organization of the essay from start to finish.
3. Would you classify this essay as a “qualified argument?” Why or why not?
4. List the author’s specific contextual examples throughout the essay. Explain how they help to support the author’s claims.
5. Explain the effectiveness of the conclusion. Locate a powerful statement and explain its effectiveness. Then, locate the “call to action” and explain its effectiveness.
6. How does the author incorporate ethos, logos, and pathos into their argument? Provide an example of each in your explanation.
You will answer each question and then you will share that answer with one of your classmates.
So you can compare if you are both on the right track. This is a graded assignment. The next step is us creating our own thesis and body topics.

Due:
Through the words and actions of Gatsby's guests, what is Fitzgerald trying to show us specifically about the culture of the Roaring ‘20s, and perhaps, about human behavior in general?
By now, you should have read the first 4 Chapters of the Great Gatsby. You should be getting a gauge of what the people around him are like and what the culture was like (especially after your research project) Once you respond make sure to agree or disagree with your classmate's response and pose a follow up question for full credit.
Follow up post is due on Wednesday!

Allusion is a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance. It does not describe in detail the person or thing to which it refers.
An example of an Allusion in Into The Wild,
“McCandless could endeavor to explain that he answered to statues of a
higher order—that as a latter-day adherent of Henry David Thoreau, he took as
gospel the essay “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience” and thus considered it his
moral responsibility to flout the laws of the
state”(p28).
This Allusion is referring to the fact the McCandless
did not really care about the laws of the state. He was more inclined to break
the rules if they were more convenient to him and he did not care for any type
of government.
There are many Allusions in The Great Gatsby as well.
This week I've posted a cartoon in which you will have to answer a few questions in contrast to the Great Gatsby.

his is your first question for argumentation. You will respond by tomorrow and on Wednesday you will have answered and asked a classmate a follow up question to further discussion.
