Ms. Wilkes was born and raised in Moreno Valley, a small suburb of the Inland Empire in Southern California. She moved to the Bay Area in 2009 to attend California State University, East. She graduated in 2013 with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration - Marketing and Corporate Management. Realizing her passion for teaching while studying undergrad, she pursued substitute teaching for a year before teaching 6-8th grade mathematics at Sankofa Academy in North Oakland. Throughout the next six years Ms. Wilkes worked at several schools in North and West Oakland teaching 7-8 grade mathematics. During this time she pursued a Single-Subject Mathematics Teaching Credential, as well as a Masters in Urban Education, both from Holy Names University in Oakland, Ca.
Ms. Wilkes left the middle school classroom to join the OMI team teaching Algebra 2 and Math Intervention in 2019. She is thrilled for the opportunity and up for the challenge the new position brings!
