As a college preparatory school, the Oakland Military Institute (OMI) has a demanding academic program. An applicant must have satisfactorily completed the previous grade for admission to the next grade (e.g. complete fifth grade for sixth grade admission, complete sixth grade for seventh grade admission, etc).
An applicant must be age appropriate for their grade (e.g. students applying for the sixth grade cannot be older than 11 years, 9 months at the beginning of their sixth grade year).
Supporting Documents Required
In addition to the completed and signed APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION form, the following documents must be submitted.
Any of the following: Birth certificate from any country, a passport, an I-94, a transcript, OR a report card.
Grade level Verification
Any of the following : Signed letter from your current school, transcript, prior year promotion certificate, or the child’s most recent report card.
Verification of Custody
Any of the following : Parent’s, guardian’s or caregiver’s passport, driver’s license, or official ID Card in conjunction with documentation in the form of a Birth Certificate, guardianship papers or court documents.

Except for existing pupils at OMI who will fill out an “Intent to Re-enroll” form, if the number of students applying exceeds the number of spaces available for the 2017-2018 school year, a public lottery will be held to randomly select those applicants who will be considered for acceptance. The lottery if needed will be held on Thursday, March 30th, 2017 on the OMI campus at www.oakmil.org by on Friday, .. The Public is welcome to attend. A notification about whether the lottery is needed will be posted to the OMI website at
The following are procedures used for the lottery. The OMI administration will determine the number of available spaces for each grade based on the number of current students who have returned their “Intent to Re-enroll” forms. Generally, there are 120 spaces for incoming 6th grade students, and each grade level cannot exceed 120 students total, however, the OMI administration reserves the right to adjust those numbers based on class size policies and budgetary considerations. Per our Charter, preference in the lottery will be given to the following applicants in this order: 1) Siblings of current OMI cadets; 2) Children of OMI employees or board members; 3) Applicants who reside in Oakland Unified School District boundaries; 4) California residents from outside the OUSD attendance boundaries. All prospective students who have submitted a complete application packet prior to the March 17th, 2017 deadline will have their names entered into the random drawing. If needed, separate lotteries will be held for each grade level and names will be pulled randomly and assigned a lottery number. Spaces will be filled as they are available, and those who are not offered a space will be placed on the waiting list in the order their names are drawn. Students selected in the lottery for an available space and those who are placed on the waiting list must attend and successfully complete the Summer Entrance Camp in order to qualify for admission to OMI. Students who submit their completed applicationafter the March 17th 2017 deadline will be placed on the waiting list only after the lottery has been executed, in the order in which they are received. Notification will be emailed to those late applicants.
If a lottery is held, applicants will be notified in writing and/or by email of the results of the lottery and their place on the waiting list if applicable. If a student is placed on the waiting list, their position on the list will only kept for the 2017-2018 school year. They must reapply for the 2018-2019 school year. If the Administration determines that any information provided on an application has been intentionally misrepresented, the application shall be invalidated.
Parents and prospective students must attend the Parent Orientation on at 5:00 PM on Friday, June 2, 2017, at the OMI Campus
