Girls Volleyball Headed to North Coast Section Playoffs
It's been a historic season for the Lady Grizzlies, who won a program best 15 games and qualified for the CIF post-season as the #16 seed in D5. OMI will play #1 seed Head-Royce in the 1st round of NCS.
Softball Earns NCS Scholastic Championship Team Award
The Varsity Softball team was presented with the North Coast Section Spring Scholastic Team Award, recognizing the top three NCS teams with highest composite GPA's. The Lady Grizzlies earned an impressive 3.46 team GPA.
Grizzly Scholar Athletes of Year Announced
Congratulations to seniors Matt Luna (Soccer, Volleyball) and Serina Hersom (Basketball, Softball) who are the 2014-15 recipients of the Bret Wallan Scholar Athlete of the Year award. Both Matt and Serina will be attending San Francisco State University next year.
Softball Caps Historic Season with Trip to NCS Playoffs
Varsity Softball, by way of a 11-9 regular season record, became the first Girls Varsity program at OMI to qualify for CIF North Coast Section Playoffs. They earned a #13 seed in Division 5 and will face off against #4 seed Calistoga. The team averaged 16.3 runs per game and had four all-league selections.

Henderson Tran Recipient of 2015 NCS Foundation Scholarship
Henderson, a senior captain in both Varsity Basketball and Track, has been selected by the North Coast Section to receive the $1000 Foundation Scholarship for 2015. Henderson will be attending UC Davis next Fall.
Rwejuna Nyundo Commits to Chico State
Congratulations to senior Rwejuna Nyundo, who will play soccer at Chico State next season. Rwejuna is the all-time leading goal scorer in program history and was a 2-time BCL 1st team selection.
Girls Basketball Wins at Oracle Arena
The Girls Varsity basketball team participated in the Golden State Warriors "Play Where the Pros Play" program this week and made the most of it, defeating California Crosspoint 40-29 for their third consecutive victory. The Grizzlies now enter the BCL Playoffs with a 7-3 league and 14-12 overall record.
Varsity Soccer Advances to NCS Quarterfinal
After earning a #11 seed for the D2 North Coast Section Soccer Playoffs by way of an 12-8-2 record and second place finish in their first year competing in the BCL East, the Grizzlies traveled north and knocked off #6 St. Vincent 3-1. This is their 4th consecutive trip to CIF post-season and in those four seasons the Grizzlies have compiled an astounding overall record of 64-26-6.
Steph Curry Films Under Armour Commercial at OMI Gym
Under Armour selected Coast Guard Island Gymnasium, home of the OMI Grizzlies, to shoot a commercial for Steph Curry's ClutchFit Drive Basketball Shoe. The June 27th, eight-hour production involved over 40 UA crew members and staff, and UA made a sizable donation to OMI Athletics. The television and web versions of the 30 sec spot have just been released. Thank you to Under Armour and Steph!
Harrison Barnes Drops by OMI!
Warriors star Harrison Barnes was on campus last week to visit with a select group of OMI student-athletes and spoke to them about the importance of working hard in the classroom and pursuing a college education. Barnes, the 2011 ACC Rookie of the Year and 7th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, then challenged the players to a game of HORSE, took pictures, and signed autographs. Thanks to Harrison, the Warriors, and MRC for creating this special opportunity!
Boys Volleyball Earn NCS Scholastic Championship Team Award
The Grizzly Boys Volleyball team was presented with the North Coast Section Spring 2014 Scholastic Championship Team Award, recognizing the top three NCS Varsity teams in each division with the highest composite GPA. Age Quod Agis!
"New" Leader's Field is Completed
The much anticipated grand unveiling of OMI's new turf field took place last Friday. The "new" Leader's Field is complete with a track and school logo, and will serve as the campus centerpiece for years to come.
OMI Student-Athlete Receives NCS "Foundation" Scholarship
Senior Kimmy Nguyen, who is currently ranked #1 in her class, has been selected by the North Coast Section to receive a $1,000 scholarship towards college. The scholarship, awarded to twenty-four applicants out of 170 NCS member schools, recognizes the outstanding record of achievement as a scholar, athlete, and citizen of his/her community. Kimmy is a three-sport star who has lettered in Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball, and maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Twelve Cadets Participate in "Youth On Course" Golf Program
OMI is pleased to announce a partnership with NCGA Foundation's Youth on Course initiative, which is providing twelve lucky OMI cadets the incredible opportunity to learn the game of golf free of cost. The participants will receive weekly clinics at Claremont Country Club with professional golf coaches, equipment included, for fourteen weeks, and will have the opportunity to apply for internships and scholarships upon completion of the program.
2nd PCA Student-Athlete Workshop a Big Success
OMI recently hosted its second Positive Coaching Alliance workshop that was attended by fifty-eight Grizzly Spring Sports student-athletes. Joseph Thomas, a former Oakland prep and Sac State basketball standout, was again our trainer. Joseph shared with our students the principles of becoming a Triple Impact Competitor; a competitor who makes himself better, his teammates better, and the game better. The athletes learned about the importance of leading by example, filling their teammates emotional tanks, how to bounce back from mistakes.
Four Time Super Bowl Champ Eric Wright Visits OMI
In conjunction with Learning Think Tank, 49er legend Eric Wright spoke to the Grizzly student body about the importance of doing well on the SAT, setting goals, and striving for greatness. All OMI juniors who complete a SAT course with 100% attendance this spring will receive an iPad mini!
OMI Cadet Qualifies for the USA National Junior Olympic Boxing Team
Congratulations to senior Martha Fabela, who last week was one of only three women to qualify for the US National Junior Olympics Boxing Team. Martha, who trains out of the famed King's Boxing Gym in Oakland, will begin training for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
OMI Athletic Director Honored with Norm MacKenzie Award
OMI Athletic Director Sean Moler was recently selected by the California State Athletic Directors Association to receive this year's Norm MacKenzie Award, which is presented to "Rookie" Athletic Directors who display superior leadership skills in managing a high school athletic program and who have been in their current role for less than four years. Coach Moler will receive his award at the California State Athletic Directors Association awards banquet on April 12th, 2014 in San Diego. Sean was also recently named a finalist for the 2014 Positive Coaching Alliance's Double-Goal Coach Award presented by MaxPreps.
OMI Welcomes 2008 Track & Field Olympian Erica McLain
Erica McLain, a Stanford grad and US Junior and Collegiate Triple Jump Record Holder, spoke to the OMI student body on November 18th about determination, perseverance, work ethic, and nutrition, all within the context of John Wooden's Pyramid of Success. She is an amazing role model and OMI was very fortunate to have her visit.
Varsity Boys Soccer Streak of 35 Consecutive BCL Wins Finally Snapped
It was an amazing run, and another amazing season for OMI Varsity Soccer. The team lost their first game to a league opponent since October 2011 when Emery outlasted the Grizzlies 1-0 in the BCL Tournament Championship last week, but it did little to dampen their spirits. The Grizzlies (17-5-2) earned an all-time best #8 seed in the NCS D2 Playoffs, and had a record eight team members make the BCL all-league team, including back-to-back MVP Robert Garcia.
Grizzly Hoopers Make the Sporting Green
The August 11th edition of the SF Chronicle's Sports Section featured seniors Kaylin Porche and Jonathan Clayton in a article about how OMI is building leaders of character outside the traditional classroom setting. Kaylin and Jonathan, both members of the BCL Champion Grizzlies Basketball team, were found on the trail in Mt. Shasta practicing the ethics of "Leave No Trace," and made quite an impression on writer Tom Stienstra. Age Quod Agis!

Nicolette Brown Qualifies for NCS Track Championships
Congratulations to senior Nicolette Brown who set personal bests in the 200 and 400 meter at the BAC Track Championships at Kezar Stadium, finishing 3rd in each event. She is the first Track athlete from OMI to qualify for the North Coast Section Championships. Good luck Nicolette!!!

Boys Basketball Undefeated in BCL, Return to NCS Playoffs as #11 Seed
The Grizzly hoops squad (20-8) just finished a historic run, going a perfect 14-0 in league play and putting away Emery 53-26 in the BCL Tournament for their 15th consecutive victory. They will face #6 seed Marin Academy in the first round of D5 North Coast Section playoffs on Wednesday, February 20th at Lick Wilmerding HS in SF, 7pm. GO GRIZZLIES!

Lacrosse Comes to OMI
6th and 7th grade students just wrapped up a six week intensive Lacrosse clinic run by the Oakland Lacrosse Club. Thank you to Coach Kevin Kelley of Cal Berkley LAX and his staff for doing such an amazing job. A number of OMI cadets will continue with Coach Kelley's U14 Club team.
Boys Soccer Wins Back-to-Back BCL Titles!
The OMI Varsity Boys Soccer team capped their historic undefeated league season last week with a 2-0 victory over Fremont Christian in the BCL playoff final, securing another NCS playoff birth. The teamfinished with a 19-4-1 overall record, 12-0 in league, and will face #5 seed Branson in the first round of the North Coast Section Playoffs next Wednesday. Midfielders Steve Leon and Robert Garcia were selected as Co-MVP's of the Bay Counties League.
Olympian Natalie Coughlin Speaks to OMI Student Body
Thank you to Harper for Kids who brought 12-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin to OMI on October 1st to speak to the student body about a wide range of topics, including the pyramid of success, nutrition, time management, and what it takes to be a world-class athlete.

OMI Athletics is proud to announce that NBA legend and former Warriors Coach Al Attles will be coming to OMI to speak to the school about his life experiences as a player and coach here in the Bay Area.
Boys Volleyball Heading to BCL Playoffs!
With a 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 win yesterday over Urban, the Varsity Boys Volleyball team has qualified for league playoffs for the first time in school history. The Grizzlies, with an overall record of 7-7, still have two games remaining and will most likely face off against top seeded and undefeated Contra Costa Christian on May 9th in the first round of playoffs.
OMI Adds Track & Field!
Our Grizzly Varsity Track Team competed in its first ever BAC competition this week at Chabot College. The fledgeling team, who is coached by James Jackson, definitely made an impression, with a number of Grizzly runners finishing in the top three spots of their respective heats. Coach Jackson is also the assistant Track Coach at Chabot.
Grizzly Basketball NCS Playoff Bound for Second Straight Year!
The Varsity Boys Basketball team capped another impressive season by earning a #14 seed in the North Coast Section Playoffs starting next week. The Grizzlies have won 19 games, finishing second place in the BCL, and will face #3 University SF at historic Kezar Pavillion.

OMI Hoops on a Roll
Now at the midway mark of the 2011-12 season, both Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball teams are well positioned for solid league season runs. The Boys Varsity squad (7-5) won the Consolation trophy with at win over Emery at the Piedmont Invitational, and have recorded impressive wins over Capuchino, Redwood Christian, and Leadership SF. The revamped Girls team took second place at the Drew Invitational and after starting 1-5, have improved their record to 3-6 with wins over International Studies Academy and Jewish Community. League action starts this Friday.
Varsity Boys Soccer Wins BCL Title!!!
The amazing ride continues this Saturday when our BCL champion Grizzlies (16-7-1) face off against Redwood Christian at Head-Royce (2:00PM) in the semifinals of the Division III NCS Playoffs. They earned their #5 seed and right to play on by soundly defeating Contra Costa Christian 3-0 in the BCL title game played last Friday at Bentley School. It was the first BCL title for OMI Soccer. Go Grizzlies!

OMI Enters Into Historic Partnership with Coast Guard
OMI Athletics now has a permanent home! The partnership, signed last week, will grant OMI interscholastic sports teams access to Coast Guard Island (Alameda) sporting facilities starting with the 2010-11 basketball season that gets underway next week. Soccer, Volleyball, and Softball home contests will also be played on the base.
